A modern refuge celebrates indoor outdoor living on the Puget Sound
Heliotrope Architects have designed this spectacular modern refuge that overlooks Puget Sound, located in Fauntleroy, a neighborhood in West Seattle, Washington. Situated on Puget Sound’s Fauntleroy Cove, this home faces Vashon Island, Blake Island, and the Kitsap Peninsula to the west. The concept of this 3,442-square-foot dwelling is all about the experience of entering into another world.
Concrete and cedar perimeter walls, a water feature, and a heritage tree combine to create a sense of sanctuary from the outside world. The house itself turns its back on the street in favor of conversation with the sea; on the main level, expansive water views and sliding pocket doors with access to the garden effectively blur the boundary between indoors and out.

On the upper level, a mixture of skylights and picture windows creates a soothing luminosity for sleeping spaces. The lower level opens directly to the beach and celebrates this proximity with a shower, spa, sauna, bar, paddleboard storage, and fire pit. The design utilizes every available square inch of an atypical site, becoming a private sanctuary for a young and active family.
What We Love: This modern refuge features a series of stacked boxes perched on a bluff overlooking Puget Sound. A pair of sliding glass walls open up to transform the living space into an amazing indoor-outdoor living experience. We can imagine how incredible it would be to watch sunsets over the water from the living room or sit out on the balcony and dine alfresco. Overall, the project team did a fantastic job of creating a family home that provides privacy on the street side, while maximizing water views.
